About Dennis Staines Construction

I began my construction career as a framer in Lake Tahoe in 1972, a very   different path for a guy who, just a year before, received his MS in Psychology from Portland State University.  After spending years in wet Portland, working outdoors in Tahoe’s dry climate was a good fit for me.  It did work out well – three years later I was running my own framing company, building high-end homes.

Soon it occurred to me that the quality homes I was building would be well-served to harness some of the abundant sunshine available in Lake Tahoe.  I began to   study how that could be done, and by the time I moved my family to Sisters in 1978, I was a passionate advocate of passive solar construction.

In Sisters, as Sundigne Homes, I built homes in the Sisters and Black Butte Ranch area that were both energy-efficient and partially heated by the power of the sun.  My homes were state-of-the-art passive solar, and I was recognized with awards such as a HUD Passive Solar Design Competition grant, and Most Energy-Efficient Home Award from Building a Better Central Oregon.

Upon moving to Bend in 1999, I changed the name of my business to Dennis Staines Construction, consistent with my belief that building an energy-efficient and sustainable home should be the obligation of all building contractors, not just solar building contractors.  Over the past decade I have continued to expand my knowledge and understanding of sustainability and energy-efficiency by taking classes and receiving the State of Oregon Tax-credit Certification in solar electric and solar hot water.  In addition, I have recently demonstrated my knowledge of the science behind building sustainable homes by being awarded the prestigious Sustainable Homes Professional designation, or SHP.

I believe in being an active member of the Bend community. I have been a board member of United Way of Bend, and the Deschutes Children’s Foundation.  Currently, I am member of the Central Oregon Builders Association and a supporter and donor of the Central Oregon Environmental Center.  I am also a trade ally of the Energy Trust of Oregon and a certified member of the Earth Advantage Institute.
